'Our Only Comedian' — Charles James Mathews

Carlo Pellegrini · Carlo Pellegrini ('Ape'), Vanity Fair, 2 October 1875

Pellegrini renders the celebrated light-comedy actor Charles James Mathews (1803–1878) as a lean, slightly stooped gentleman in full evening dress — black frock coat, white waistcoat, bow tie, top hat, and walking cane — presented in the magazine's characteristic three-quarter profile. The caption beneath reads 'Our only Comedian,' a tribute to Mathews's near-total dominance of genteel comic acting on the Victorian stage. The caricature is affectionate rather than savage: Pellegrini elongates the jaw and sharpens the nose to signal age and donnish hauteur, but the overall tone flatters a man still working in his seventies. The joke is social — one man so good at comedy that the field is considered empty without him.
