'The Railway Interest': Sir Edward Watkin

Signed by Ape (Carlo Pellegrini), this chromolithograph caricatures Sir Edward Watkin, the railway magnate who chaired the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and championed an early Channel Tunnel scheme. The caption — 'The Railway Interest' — names his parliamentary identity as much as his commercial one. Pellegrini renders him with characteristic economy: a bulbous, ruddy head perched atop a double-breasted frock coat, hands thrust behind his back, expression guardedly self-satisfied. The inflated cranium beside the diminished body was Ape's standard device for conveying intellectual vanity. No ethnic caricature is present here; the satirical grammar is purely class-based, poking at the self-importance of Victorian industrial capital dressed up as public service.
