Smith — barrister, Conservative MP, and future Lord Chancellor — at full length in morning dress: black frock coat, striped trousers, red boutonnière, and a glossy top hat worn with studied hauteur. A cigarette holder extends from his raised right hand, one hand pocketed, feet planted wide. The caption quotes his notorious 1906 maiden speech in the Commons — 'Moab is my Washpot' (Psalm 108:9), a taunt implying the Liberal benches were fit only for contempt — which electrified Westminster and made his reputation overnight. Ward's caricature sharpens Smith's angular jaw and elongated limbs into the image of a man already performing supreme self-confidence. No ethnic caricature is present; the satire is purely of class and ego.
