Arnold Burrowes Kemball — 'Asia Minor'

Carlo Pellegrini · 8 June 1878

Carlo Pellegrini ('Ape') presents Lieutenant-General Sir Arnold Burrowes Kemball, K.C.S.I., C.B., in a side-profile chromolithograph that was his signature mode. Kemball stands hand on hip in a double-breasted dark frock coat and black bow-tie, his ruddy, broad face crowned by thinning reddish hair and a full white moustache. The caption, 'Asia Minor', is a knowing pun: Kemball spent his career in the Persian Gulf, India, and as British military commissioner with the Ottoman forces during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, making him literally a minor figure in Asian affairs. The comedy derives from the play on his rank and role.
