Zane Grey's Western Magazine, May-June 1947

This issue of Zane Grey's Western Magazine (May-June 1947) features the complete novel The Heritage of the Desert by Zane Grey, originally published in 1910. The story follows John Hare, an ailing Easterner who encounters August Naab, a stern Mormon rancher, in the Utah desert. After rescuing Hare from pursuing outlaws led by the cutthroat Dene, Naab brings him into his camp, where Hare meets Mescal, a part-Indian girl raised by Naab's family. As Naab shelters Hare despite warnings about Dene's gang, the novel establishes tensions between Mormon principles and frontier lawlessness. The issue also includes short stories by S. Omar Barker, Eugene Cunningham, and others; a picture story about "Uncle Billy and the Doolin Gang"; and Henry Herbert Knibbs's poem "The Hills."
