The Last of the Teeheemen
This expedition narrative follows Captain Holton, Bruce Benton, Herman Van Otter, and Rosalie Sharon's father Roderick Sharon as they return to the lost Valley of Teeheemen in Brazil's interior. Five years earlier, Holton published an account of discovering this hidden civilization. After Sharon's daughter was kidnapped by savages during a research expedition, he contacts Holton, recognizing similarities between the kidnappers and Holton's descriptions of the valley's inhabitants. The party of four white men and three native porters approaches the hollow mountain entrance. They encounter and kill an extinct saber-tooth tiger, then enter the abandoned temple city where they encounter bizarre creatures—a giant white snake and enormous bat-winged birds with spherical heads. The city appears deserted, raising questions about the former human inhabitants' disappearance. The men continue searching the overgrown palace grounds, where they spot an ape-like creature fleeing into the trees.
