The Valley of the Shadow

This is not a pulp magazine. The OCR text describes The Valley of the Shadow: Eight Sermons on the Doctrine of Future Punishment by Charles H. Hall, D.D., published by T. Whittaker in New York in 1878. This is a theological treatise in sermon form, not pulp fiction.

The work comprises eight religious discourses arguing against the traditional Christian doctrine of eternal hell and endless torment. Hall contests what he characterizes as the "common system" rooted in Calvinist theology, which posits infinite original sin, total depravity, and correspondingly infinite punishment. He disputes these premises through biblical analysis and philosophical argument. The sermons examine specific terminology (particularly the word "Gehenna"), Augustine's theological contributions, the meaning of "eternal," Old Testament and New Testament doctrines regarding punishment, liturgical precedent, and appeals to conscience. Hall maintains that divine judgment is final and just, but argues that evil cannot be philosophically eternal.
