The Saint Mystery Magazine, April 1962

This April 1962 issue of The Saint Mystery Magazine, edited by Leslie Charteris, collects six stories spanning classic to contemporary detective fiction. "The Charitable Countess" by Charteris concerns Simon Templar investigating a charity racket, examining his voluminous mail from admirers, cranks, and supplicants, including a letter from reformed criminal Marty O'Connor seeking employment after a garage investment fails. Cornell Woolrich contributes "Flowers from the Dead"; Craig Rice offers "Tears of Evil"; and Fredric Brown provides "The Spherical Ghoul." The issue also reprints Edgar Allan Poe's canonical "The Purloined Letter" and William O'Farrell's "Death Among the Geraniums." Charteris's editorial reflects on atomic-age anxieties and the Saint insignia's wartime adoption by military squadrons and NATO's anti-satellite program (SAINT).
