This anthology reprints four detective stories and one original novella. Fredric Brown's "Murder Set to Music" follows Ralph Oliver, who co-owns a used car lot with his friend Danny Bushman. Oliver arrives at Danny's apartment to find him brutally beaten by a large, masked assailant—Oliver suspects mistaken identity. Brown develops the mystery through Oliver's attempt to understand the attack while managing its fallout with Danny's wife Doris. James E. Gunn's "Pill Roller" concerns a man building a million-dollar business through dubious organizational methods. Poul Anderson's "Corpse in a Suit of Armor" introduces detective Dr. John Koskelainen. Lawrence G. Blochman's "Open All Night" features Finicky Flynn, an unusual 1930s detective who runs a waterfront diner while investigating murder. John Jakes contributes the original "The Eleven Diplomats."
