This serialized melodrama depicts a domestic crisis when Phil Gordon discovers a photograph of his wife Marie embracing the mysterious Jack Hoover at a country club. The narrative reveals Hoover as a sophisticated social parasite and blackmailer operating with an accomplice named Jones: Hoover engineers compromising situations with wealthy women while Jones photographs them for extortion. Meanwhile, Alice Procter—a resentful society woman who lost Philip Gordon years earlier—grows hostile toward her virtuous younger sister Betty, whom their father constantly praises. Alice begins plotting with Hoover to seduce Betty to damage her reputation. After quarreling with her father, Alice phones Hoover, feigning recklessness to secure a ride in his new Packard, setting a deliberate trap in motion.
