Catalog Description:

This January 1949 issue of Super Science Stories (Vol. 5, No. 1) contains Henry Kuttner's novel The Black Sun Rises, set in a post-apocalyptic future decades after global thermonuclear war devastated much of Earth. The narrative follows Dale Heath, lieutenant to Firstman Bob Garson, an ambitious tyrant who has unified the Lake Country region and built an empire using military force. Heath rebels against Garson's violent expansionism and threatens invasion of peaceful southern territories. The issue includes three novelettes: Stanley Mullen's Moonworm's Dance (about humanity facing an evolutionary savior), James Blish's The Bounding Crown, and Walter Kubilius's A Handful of Stars; plus four short stories by Ray Bradbury, Sanford Vaid, Manly Wade Wellman, and Cleve Cartmill. Features fandom news, a Finlay portfolio, and reader correspondence.
