This February 1919 Munsey's Magazine issue features "The Wolf of Kahlotus," a serial romance of the Pacific Northwest by Maryland Allen, illustrated by W. B. King. Her father, owner of the remote timber and wheat lands around Kahlotus, Oregon, was found dead near Kingfisher Crossing with savage animal wounds—his throat torn open and shoulder gashed. Tolliver suspects neither the supernatural "Wolf of Kahlotus," a legendary curse tied to an Indian chief wronged by Hudson Bay traders, nor labor conflicts with the I.W.W., but rather something connected to a torn scrap of dark-green cloth bearing an embroidered coronet found in her father's hand. With two brothers fighting in France and her own intuitions, Tolliver presents McKean with the mystery of her father's violent death, initiating the story's investigation.
