This serial installment opens with Helen Thorneycroft, a well-educated companion employed by the wealthy but jealous Mrs. MacArthur, filling invitation cards. The genteel, anxious Mr. MacArthur makes awkward conversation about the weather; his wife interrupts sharply, suspicious of Helen's rapport with him. Helen has secretly posted her resignation letter, planning to leave in September.

Another visitor, the homely but kind Dickie Tiark, senses her unhappiness and hints he knows Mrs. MacArthur has been cruel. That evening, Mrs. MacArthur accuses Helen of responsibility for missing pearls locked in an Indian cabinet—pearls Helen claims she never touched. Despite Helen's protestations and her careful guardianship of the cabinet keys, Mrs. MacArthur grows accusatory. The setup suggests Mrs. MacArthur has orchestrated the theft to frame her employee.
