A letter arrives announcing that Sir Gilbert's daughter-in-law Giovanna, widow of his son and mother of his heir, will return to England after her grandmother's death. Lady Pell speculates that Giovanna, now improved in social position, may seek remarriage and society life. Later, Captain Verinder arrives with his nephew Luigi, Sir Gilbert's grandson recently returned from abroad. The narrative registers Sir Gilbert's suspicion about Luigi's nervous demeanor and averted gaze, contrasting it unfavorably with Lisle's openness.
