This serialized novel continues chapter XXIII, "Under Examination." A visit to the Warrennes' house reveals developing romantic interests: Captain Scudamore attends Alice Warrenne, leaving a nosegay of violets, which visibly distresses the resentful Florence. At the Ferns that evening, Mrs. Creswick's guests include the Thomasons and their daughter Ada, whose cousin Charles Courtenay (absent, remaining in town) has apparently made an impression on Maud Warrenne. Ada discusses her cousin's gravity and her enjoyment of teasing him, while Maud's expressions suggest unexpected feelings stirring. The narrative tracks multiple courtship tensions among the younger characters.
