The Engagement of Susan Chase, by Mrs. Henry Wood

This serialized novel by the author of East Lynne concerns Susan Chase's return to England by ship from Barbados after a distressing sojourn. Upon arriving home, she reunites with her cold but devoted sister Ursula and learns that Emma Carnagie, the wife of her friend Lieutenant Carnagie, has unexpectedly returned to England alone, accompanied by Captain Chard. Susan reveals that Emma fled Barbados clandestinely with Chard, abandoning her husband who subsequently fell dangerously ill. When Emma arrives home that evening, Ursula and Susan confront her. Emma acknowledges her infidelity without shame, declaring her intention to obtain a divorce from Carnagie and marry Chard, whom she claims truly loves her. The sisters express shock and disapproval, while Emma maintains she has committed no wrong in freeing herself from an unhappy marriage.
