This September 1887 issue of The Argos continues "Lady Grace," a serial novel by Mrs. Henry Wood, author of East Lynne. In Chapter XIII, Lord Avon informs his niece Gertrude that her cousin Charles faces financial trouble: he's been seen at theaters in questionable company, the Bishop of Denham discovered unorthodox sketches on his blotting pad, and jewelers claim he purchased nearly one hundred pounds' worth of goods he hasn't paid for. Charles denies the charges, suspecting someone is impersonating him. Their engagement to Mary Dynevor has been broken off. Sir Everard Wilmot arrives unexpectedly to propose to Gertrude, revealing he loves her, not Mary. Gertrude accepts. Chapter XIV shows Charles in his chambers in Pump Court receiving a visitor—his brother Cyras, a striking physical double, just returned to England after traveling in Paris.
