This issue features Chapter XXV ("Who Did It?") of "The Mysteries of Heron Dyke," a serialized mystery-crime narrative. The chapter opens with Ella Winter discovering the dead body of Hubert Stone—a previously missing wanderer—found by the servant Aaron Stone at the edge of the lawn, stabbed through the heart with a stiletto. Chief-Constable Wade investigates, determining the death occurred during a burglary: jewels were stolen from a bureau in the sitting-room after thieves cut through a window with a diamond cutter. Wade interrogates Miss Winter and Mrs. Toynbee, learning Mrs. Toynbee inadvertently disclosed the jewels' existence and location to ladies at a tea-party, where gentleman Philip Cleeve was present. The investigation suggests the robbery and murder are connected. Dr. Spreckley discovers Hubert carried a locket containing Miss Winter's portrait. The narrative concludes with Dorothy Stone, Aaron's mother, mourning Hubert's death while Ella attempts comfort.
