# Called to the Rescue

This serial fiction, beginning in January 1879, opens with a domestic scene at the Combermere estate in Westmoreland. Sir Marcus, a retired London surgeon, and his daughter Kate learn that unexpected guests—Mr. and Mrs. Bourne—will arrive unannounced, having been prevented from visiting elsewhere by scarlet fever. Kate dreads their visit because they quarrel with other expected guests. Relief arrives when Lewis Frankland, son of an Indian judge and now a schoolmaster, appears mud-spattered from traversing the hills. Lewis, who grew up with Kate as a family friend and was recently appointed assistant master at a nearby school, seeks lodging after his coaching duties ended early. Kate welcomes him despite her earlier frustrations about hospitality.
