# A Secret of the Sea

This serial installment, continuing the novel by the author of "In the Dead of Night," depicts Jonas Pringle's discovery of a hidden safe in his employer Van Duren's office. After months of work duplicating a key to the strong-room, Pringle finally opens the locked door. Inside are iron drawers containing over three thousand pounds in gold, banknotes, drafts, and bills of exchange. However, a small cedar-wood box captivates him more: within it lie old letters and a woman's portrait. Pringle recognizes the portrait as his long-lost daughter Jessie. He realizes Van Duren seduced and abandoned her years ago. Earlier that night, Pringle had glimpsed Jessie on the street counting money, but she fled when he called to her. Now confronting evidence of Van Duren's villainy, Pringle must choose between stealing the money and fleeing London, or remaining to search for his daughter and seek revenge against the man who ruined her.
