This issue of Lg Argos (November 1, 1873) features Chapter XXXI of "The Master of Greylands" by the author of East Lynne. Sister Mildred returns rejuvenated to the Grey Nunnery convent, where the Sisters celebrate with wine and gifts. Lawyer Knivett arrives with news that Thomas Hill, the longtime clerk and friend of Mary Ursula's late father, has died suddenly. Mary learns she is his sole executrix and will inherit approximately 350 pounds yearly. Knivett additionally reports the sudden death of Sir Richard Blake-Gordon nearby. After his departure, Jane Hallet flees her aunt's house in distress and encounters the Sisters at the Nunnery gate. Attempting to escape their questions, Jane slips on the rain-slicked bank and injures herself. She is brought inside and put to bed, but falls gravely ill during the night.
