This serial novel concerns Charlotte Guise, a French woman traveling to England in search of her husband Anthony Castlemaine, who was sent to claim his inherited estate, Greylands. Learning upon arrival at the Dolphin Inn that Anthony has disappeared under mysterious circumstances—reportedly shot and killed near the Friar's Keep cloisters by his uncle James Castlemaine in a dispute over the inheritance—Charlotte resolves to uncover the truth. Concealing her identity and real purpose, she remains at the inn while her young daughter recovers from chest inflammation. Alone with her grief and conviction of murder, Charlotte devotes herself to discovering what became of her husband's body and bringing the crime to light, planning to account for her prolonged stay while investigating the mystery surrounding Greylands and her uncle-in-law's actions.
