# Within the Maze by Mrs. Henry Wood

This serialized novel from The Argos (August 1, 1872) continues the mystery established by the author of East Lynne. Karl Andinnian visits detective Burtenshaw's office in London to extract information about the criminal Philip Salter, whom Karl suspects is hiding near his estate at Foxwood. Though Karl conceals his true motive, Burtenshaw reveals that police spotted a man resembling Salter three months prior on the Great Western line. When Grimley, a police officer, arrives and confirms Karl's description matches Salter exactly, he deduces the fugitive hides near Foxwood. Grimley reports this to Scotland Yard, and the shrewd officer Tatton is assigned the case to recapture Salter. The chapter concludes as Tatton arrives at Foxwood station and takes lodgings in Paradise Row at the home of Widow Jinks, positioning himself to investigate the neighborhood.
