# Dene Hollow
By the Author of "East Lynne," serialized in The Argosy, October 1, 1871. This chapter shows May Arde suffering pressure from her mother and Lady Lydia Clanwaring to accept Captain Jarvis Clanwaring, while suspicions mount against Tom Clanwaring (the Captain's brother). Despite her reluctance, May accepts Jarvis conditionally in September, motivated partly by a desire for revenge on Tom, though she refuses to set a wedding date.
Captain Jarvis then visits his barrister brother Otto in Lincoln's Inn, desperate about mounting debts and back claims. The brothers discuss Tom's exile, the unsolved theft of money from Sir Dene's secretary (which Otto believes the servant Black committed), and Jarvis's financial interest in marrying the wealthy May Arde—ten thousand pounds settled on her, with more to follow. Otto lives modestly, while Jarvis remains preoccupied with his financial troubles and stylish appearance. The chapter concludes with an interruption from Sergeant Sterndale's clerk rescheduling a consultation.
