The Argosy, Vol. VI

This issue of The Argosy (July 1, 1868) contains Chapter XV of "Anne Hereford" by the author of East Lynne. The narrative unfolds as domestic drama and mystery. Anne, a young orphaned companion living with the Chandos family, undertakes an errand to Marden to verify references for a prospective servant, Mrs. Penn. After satisfactory inquiries, Mrs. Penn is engaged. Complications arise when a letter meant for Mr. Chandos reaches Anne instead—containing his sister Emily's reproach about Anne's inconvenient presence at the estate, causing mortification. Anne resolves to depart for Miss Barlieu's in Nulle. Mrs. Penn, the mysterious new companion, claims prior acquaintance with Anne from her school days and introduces unsettling discussion of ghosts reportedly haunting Chandos, particularly the spirit of the late Sir Thomas. The OCR becomes garbled near the end.
