The Shadow of Ashlydyat, Vol. 1

· 1863

This is not a pulp magazine cover but the first volume of Mrs. Henry Wood's three-volume novel The Shadow of Ashlydyat, published in London in 1863—a work of Victorian domestic sensation fiction centered on a cursed family estate and the financial ruin that shadows its heirs. Wood, already famous for East Lynne (1861), specialized in melodrama built around inheritance, moral transgression, and hidden guilt. The triple-decker novel format was the dominant vehicle for serious fiction before cheap wood-pulp periodicals displaced it; in that sense, books like this one occupy the literary world the pulps would later democratize, fragment into genre, and sell by the tens of thousands on railway newsstands.
