Out of the Shadow

As the woman settles the sleeping baby in Mrs. Millington's cherished cradle (previously used for her deceased child), a tense interrogation unfolds: the visitor asks pointed questions about Mrs. Millington's feelings toward her children and burden of motherhood, then studies the room and its occupant intently. The stranger remains evasive about her identity and the baby's parentage before Mrs. Millington departs to prepare supper.
