New Worlds Science Fiction No. 70

This April 1958 issue of New Worlds (Vol. 24, No. 70) contains John Wyndham's lead novelette "For All The Night," first of four planned "threshold-of-possibility" stories exploring eight generations of the space-minded Troon family. Set in 1994 at a space station, the story follows Flight-Lieutenant George "Ticker" Troon, age twenty-four, undergoing a final interview with Air Marshal Sir Godfrey Wilde regarding his transfer from Air Force to Space Service. Wilde reveals he once knew Ticker's grandfather, also named George Montgomery Troon (nicknamed Ticker), a pilot who died young while yearning for space travel. Wyndham's accompanying profile explains his preference for scientifically plausible near-future speculation over elaborate space opera.
