Β· June 1958

# Catalog Note: NEBULA Science-Fiction, Issue 31 (June 1958)

This issue contains a length novel, four short stories, and several special features. "War Against Darkness" by William F. Temple, the second in a new series, depicts an invasion spreading across the galaxy as aliens lay plans for Earth. Robert Silverberg's "The Fires Die Down" follows Commander Dorchan Ledru of the Thanian colonisation vessel Dark Star, who discovers a habitable green planet seemingly ideal for settlement. Upon landing, humanoid inhabitants are detected approaching through the forest, forcing Ledru to follow diplomatic protocols before establishing a colony. The story explores Thanian expansion policy: primitives may be ignored; advanced civilisations warrant diplomatic liaison; intermediate cultures require negotiation or forced settlement.

Also included are Brian W. Aldiss's "Ninian's Experiences," E.C. Tubb's "The Beatific Smile," and Peter J. Ridley's "Wish Upon a Star." Kenneth Johns's "Stardust Patrol" examines cosmic meteor effects on weather and radio communication. Editorial commentary discusses the magazine's featured authors; special sections include Forrest J. Ackerman's "Scientifilm Previews."
