MURDER TO COME by Brett Halliday
Detective Mike Shayne is approached by his journalist friend Tim Rourke, who brings an unusual case: Tim's niece Suzy works for TV documentary producer Garland Perry, who has received a film clip showing his own murder. The film depicts Perry being shot twice in the back by a young pilot named Clip Weber, yet Perry is alive and has no memory of being in Miami when it was made. Their research man Fletcher has vanished. Shayne investigates and arranges to meet Weber. When confronted with the film, Weber denies ever being in the penthouse or meeting Perry, calling it a fabrication. Tension escalates between the two men, leading to physical violence when Weber attempts to strike Perry. Shayne restrains Weber and escorts him from the suite, but the young pilot escapes in the hotel lobby. Shayne remains convinced Perry is lying about his whereabouts when the film was shot.
