The story culminates in a confrontation within a mystical palace featuring fire, sacrificial altars, and occult powers.

"The Old City of Jade" by Thomas H. Knight presents an adventure tale set in a war-time shellhole where First Lieutenant meets Cedric Lawrence Baxter. They discover an inexplicably dormant city of bronze men in South America, steal an aircraft, and escape to Quito, where a landing accident injures them both.
