Tom Trueman, the Sailor; or, Life at Sea in a Merchant Vessel

This is the opening portion of Tom Trueman, the Sailor; or, Life at Sea in a Merchant Vessel, part of Griffith & Farran's "Taking Tales" series edited by W.H. Kingston. A reissue in sixpenny volumes designed for working-class and coastal readers, it presents a realistic maritime narrative. The tale begins with young Tom's father killed in an accident, forcing his impoverished family to seek work. When Tom learns of gold discoveries abroad and seeks to relieve his mother's burden, he approaches ships in Poole and meets Captain Bolton, who offers him passage on the merchant vessel Rose, bound for the Pacific Ocean via Cape Horn. Tom receives gifts from well-wishers, travels to Liverpool, and ships aboard the three-masted, thirty-man crew vessel. Under the boatswain Mr. Alder's charge, the young sailor learns rigging, climbing masts, and reefing sails while adapting to ship life's demands.
