This 1850 St. Louis publication presents a serialized narrative compiled by Professor William Beschke from George Adam's journal of the "California Phalanx," a multinational expedition of twenty-five adventurers departing New Orleans in October 1849 for the California Gold Rush overland. The company—composed of Frenchmen, Americans, Germans, British, Italians, and others—is led by Carrel with Adam as journalist and second-in-command. They are joined by Waanataa, a Sioux Indian described as grandson of a great chief, who serves as guide and translator. The narrative follows their journey via steamboat to Independence, Missouri, where they acquire sixty-two mules and provisions (including emergency rice rations), then depart for Fort Leavenworth in late November, crossing into genuine wilderness.
