Golden Argosy, Vol. V No. 8

This issue of The Golden Argosy (January 22, 1887) contains an adventure narrative titled "The Cinnamon Grizzly." The unnamed teenage protagonist, living in Colorado with his father, accompanies the seasoned hunter Pete Ridener on a mineral-collecting expedition. The pair discovers grizzly bear tracks and, capturing a cub to sell for twenty dollars, incautiously spend the night in an abandoned cabin. The parent bears besiege the structure; Pete shoots the female, but the massive male escapes. When the cub later escapes during their departure, the pursuing grizzly attacks the protagonist as his horse stumbles. Pete kills the bear with rifle shots, saving him, though he sustains a serious shoulder wound and scar. The issue also includes a biographical sketch about an Irish soldier named Moloney who rescued infant Princess Victoria from a carriage accident and subsequently received anonymous postal assistance from Queen Victoria through her secretary, Sir Henry Ponsonby. A brief piece on London advertising innovations rounds out the contents.
