# Work and Win: "The Plot That Failed" by Hal Standish
This issue (No. 735, January 3, 1913) opens the serial "The Plot That Failed" by Hal Standish. Fred Fearnot and his classmate Terry Olcott return to New York by train from a vacation upstate. After an affectionate reunion with Fred's mother and elderly nurse at Judge Fearnot's home, the boys venture out for a walk. They encounter a brutal cartman beating a downed horse with a cart rung. Fred intervenes, wrestles the rung away, and strikes the cartman when he attacks. Bystanders restrain the cartman until police arrive and arrest him. The crowd praises Fred's courage. As Fred and Terry leave, Fred expresses outrage at animal cruelty and condemns human brutality toward creatures dependent on human care.
