# Fred Fearnot and the Duke
This issue of Work and Win (No. 796, March 6, 1914) contains the opening installment of "Fred Fearnot and the Duke—or Baffling a Fortune Hunter" by Hal Standish. The serial follows Fred Fearnot's return to New York for the Christmas holidays. After a witty exchange with his sister Marguerite about his frequent absences, Fred learns that three young female guests will arrive: schoolmates Aimee Merton and Mabel Miles, plus Eunice Lambert, a former academy instructor whom the boys affectionately call "the Advocate." At the train station, Fred welcomes Eunice warmly, teasing her about her propriety during their academy days, then escorts her home where she and Marguerite bond immediately. The narrative hints at Fred's romantic attachment to Evelyn Olcott (located in Fredonia) while establishing the social complications his houseful of female guests will create.
