Chapter 1, "Nieve de verano" (Summer Snow), opens with an impossible meteorological phenomenon: a blizzard strikes Manhattan on July 4th during peak summer, witnessed by Doc Savage's associate "Renny" Renwick and "Long Tom" Roberts at the Weather Bureau. The narrative shifts to two women in a yellow taxi cab pursued by two black sedans with occupants wearing leaden-colored masks. When their tire blows, they scatter. One woman flees toward an elevated train platform while masked gunmen emerge from the sedan carrying ice-pick-like instruments. A spherical object—releasing greenish light that melts snow and generates intense heat—is released from the sedan. The woman disappears entirely before the train stairs; only her jewelry and purse remain scattered on the pavement. Police officer Patrick Brennan responds but is shot; before dying, he kills two of the attackers. Chapter 2 begins with Doc Savage himself examining instruments.
