# A Pink Memorial Stone

Arnold Briggs' detective novel follows Archer Brumel, an ex-convict detective recently released after serving five years for involuntarily killing his corrupt partner in self-defense. On New Year's Eve at the Trocadero bar in New York, Brumel encounters his old acquaintance Adrian Wilcox with the enigmatic Silvia Marcy, provoking a physical confrontation when Brumel reproaches Wilcox for neglecting his wife Ana on the holiday. The next day, Silvia visits Brumel claiming Wilcox has committed suicide and alleging the wealthy Marcy family orchestrated his death to silence dangerous secrets. Simultaneously, two criminals demand Brumel reveal where his deceased partner hid marijuana. Silvia reveals she possesses a heart condition and holds evidence of the Marcys' fraud in her doctor's files. After Brumel's kidnapping and torture, Silvia dies mysteriously. Her legacy—a pink marble gravestone—exposes the Marcys' fraudulent fortune. The investigation ultimately reveals Silvia was mentally unstable, Wilcox's suicide was her doing, and her death resulted from her condition. Brumel joins the police force and begins a relationship with Wilcox's widow, Ana.
