The group encounters Jonathan Jeriah Jerrold, a traveling photographer attempting to document the landscape with his camera apparatus. The rangers initially mistake his photographic equipment for a gun. Jerrold, employed by a cosmopolitan art bureau, joins the expedition toward the lava-beds. The narrative combines frontier adventure with mystery elements, specifically the mystery surrounding the orphaned girl's origins and the significance of her twin's unusual scar.
