This science fiction novel, set in the 22nd century, follows Dean Sorber, a young electronic engineer who has undergone a traumatic duplication. After exposure to a mutant ray in Professor Yukawa's radiobiology laboratory, Sorber finds himself split into two identical beings. He consults psychiatrist Dr. Emory Stillman, unable to determine which version of himself emerged first.

The narrative flashes back to Sorber's meeting Sonia Yukawa, the brilliant daughter of the renowned physicist Professor Yukawa, at a university party. Their relationship develops as Sorber seeks both professional advancement and romance. Dick Morton, a research chief from Electronic and Cibernetic Inc. in New York, recruits Sorber for employment while pressuring him to spy on Yukawa's classified radiological research. The plot culminates with Sorber's inexplicable cellular division—the "mutant ray" having somehow separated his atoms into two complete, identical persons, each believing he is the original.
