El resplandor del hacha (The Axe's Gleam) by Silver Kane presents a crime-horror narrative set in London and Paris. The story opens with Dr. Temple traversing Hyde Park at night, haunted by memories of a voodoo practitioner he misdiagnosed, who cursed him before dying. Pursued by an unseen assailant through fog and rain, Temple is brutally murdered—his head cleaved from his body by an axe—witnessed only by a young woman with a walking cane who discovers the corpse. The narrative then shifts to Paris, where the woman, Ingrid Newcombe, a mystery novelist and heiress, arrives with her fiancé Robin Stafford, a wealthy engineer, to view a manor house in Passy for rent. The administrator shows them the seignorial property, which contains disturbing collections: wigs arranged like scalps, shrunken heads of white victims, and a historical guillotine. Despite these grotesque furnishings, Ingrid shows interest, particularly in a Chassaigne Frères piano. The narrative suggests darker connections between the London murder and this Parisian estate.
