This horror novel follows a school trip gone wrong. Marsha, a young teacher escorting forty-four English schoolgirls on vacation, finds their driver Thompson suffering a sudden heart attack on a remote mountain road. After reviving him with CPR, she accepts help from a mysterious stranger named Hank, who drives the incapacitated driver toward medical aid.

Stranded for hours awaiting police assistance, the group is collected by a scarred bicycle-riding man who transports them via autocar deeper into wilderness forests. He delivers them not to a modern town but to an isolated, electricity-less village and an ancient hostal. There they meet a pallid, glassy-eyed innkeeper woman who seems displaced in time. The story establishes an atmosphere of mounting dread as the girls find themselves trapped in an increasingly sinister, desolate location far from civilization and assistance.
