A gothic horror-thriller set during a violent storm on the English coast. Nick Stuart, a wealthy but cynical man nearing forty, inhabits a drafty manor with his peculiar servant Bishop, whose superstitious warnings hint at dark omens. When a dog attacks the house, Stuart shoots it. Bishop prophecies death while burying the animal. Stuart then receives a seductive phone call from Katty Glenwood, inviting him to her home; her brother Ralph is conveniently absent. Driving recklessly along treacherous coastal cliffs in the tempest, Stuart's car loses control and plunges into the rocks below, exploding in flames. The final scene reveals Ralph and Katty Glenwood calmly observing the crash from their manor window, discussing Stuart's death and their inheritance—implying premeditated murder. The narrative breaks off as a telephone rings.
