# Black Book Detective, October 1947

This issue features detective and mystery fiction across several tales. The lead story, "The Long Ago Murder" by G. Wayman Jones, is a complete Black Bat novel in which Special District Attorney Tony Quinn—secretly the blind detective known as the Black Bat—is contacted by an elderly woman named Lydia Barr regarding a murder case. A man named John Powell has been shot six times and found dead, with no apparent motive or witnesses. Quinn's assistant Silk investigates Barr, discovering she is an elderly wealthy woman owning much of Barrtown and its industries, though dying of illness. The story involves mysterious circumstances and urgent meetings after dark. A complete novelet by Anthony Tompkins concerns Lieutenant Kenneth Loring, who must prove innocent a man he sent to prison awaiting execution. Additional short stories include Wayland Rice's "Advertisements," Robert Sidney Bowen's "Nail for a Noose," and Ray Cummings's "The Psychological Approach."
