The Phantom Tracker

The Phantom Trailer; or, The Prisoner of the Hill Cave by Frederick Dewey is the featured serial in this April 29, 1876 Beadle and Adams issue. The story interweaves two narrative threads across the American Southwest. Pedro Felipe, an aging Mexican scout loyal to his master Señor Martinez, pursues a hidden treasure in the haunted Land of Silence—a desolate plain where he previously rescued the master's daughter from a robber band and killed their lieutenant, "the Trailer," acquiring costly weapons and gold in the process. Simultaneously, an armed desperado follows Pedro's trail northward across the Gila River. A third plotline introduces Joel Wheeler, a disillusioned Northern emigrant returning from Mexico with his beautiful eighteen-year-old daughter Kissie, accompanied by wagons and horsemen including a young foreman named Samuel Carpenter, with whom Kissie is romantically inclined. The narrative combines frontier adventure with intrigue across desert wilderness.
