# Catalog Description

Old Strategy is a frontier adventure novel serialized in this Beadle and Adams dime novel. The featured installment follows Henry Eustace, a young hunter, and Ralph Dickens, who camp near the Black Hills during a violent thunderstorm. After Eustace falls asleep, he awakens to find five Native American warriors surrounding him; Dickens has vanished. In a desperate struggle, Eustace seizes a tomahawk and kills two attackers before lightning strikes down the remaining three and their intended victim. Sol Strange—the legendary scout known as "Old Strategy"—arrives with his wolf-hound companion Sagacity and revives the unconscious Eustace. Strange reveals that Dickens deliberately signaled the Indians to capture Eustace alive, then stole his horse. Warning that over a hundred Indians are moving toward nearby settlements, Strange and Eustace prepare to ride toward Harper's settlement to warn residents of the impending attack.
