While lodging at Lake Castle, Dick discovers a suspicious small footprint in the sand floor and later witnesses Trapper Tom mysteriously vanish from a locked, single-room structure with no apparent exits. Dick hears suppressed voices—a man's and a woman's—outside before Tom inexplicably reappears on his bunk, suggesting the castle harbors undisclosed secrets.
