The Swamp Riders

· 1883

This dime novel, serialized by Beadle and Adams, tells "The Swamp Riders," authored by George Darcy Gilbert. Set during the American Revolution in Camden, South Carolina, the narrative opens with British dragoons occupying the town, including troops under Major Darnier. Tom Matthews, a powerfully built blacksmith with an Irish assistant named Dan Maloney, becomes a central figure when his outspoken remarks about the colonial fighters provoke the major's suspicion. When a mysterious civilian, Charles Surrey, arrives and befriends Matthews, he attracts Darnier's attention. The plot thickens when drunken British officers accost a young woman, Maud Carroll, on the street, and Surrey intervenes violently, defending her honor with his sword against multiple assailants, establishing himself as both skilled fighter and rebel sympathizer.
