Beadle's Pocket Novels No. 196: Glass-Eye

This is a serial adventure from an 1874 Beadle and Adams dime novel, the opening installment of Glass-Eye, the Great Shot of the West by Captain "Bruin" Adams. Rosa Beckwith, separated from her father's wagon-train bound for California, flees a pursuing Sioux warrior across the prairie on her exhausted black stallion, Saladin. Just as the Indian closes in with his lasso, he suddenly falls dead from his horse—shot by an unseen marksman. Rosa discovers a mysterious white frontiersman riding toward her: a dark-bearded man in border dress, heavily armed with pistols and a rifle, presenting himself as both capable and somewhat rough-mannered. He addresses her casually, inquiring where she comes from, as she explains her separation from the St. Louis wagon-train heading to California.
