# Old Kyle, the Trailer

Old Kyle, the Trailer: The Renegade of the Delawares by Henry J. Thomas is a frontier adventure narrative set in early Iowa. Brandon Havens, separated from a hunting party, becomes trapped on a peninsula between two swollen rivers during a massive flood. After climbing a tree to assess his peril, he determines the island will be submerged within hours. Attempting to escape via the rushing current, he discovers an unmanned Indian canoe drifting downriver. Upon investigating its contents, Havens finds a mysterious woman in an exhausted sleep, covered by a shawl with only a small, delicate foot visible—possibly a chieftain's daughter or a captive. He boards the canoe with his dog Wolf and begins paddling downriver, uncertain whether the woman is alive or dead, while remaining vigilant against hostile Indians known to inhabit the region.
